Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MP Stalin said on Tuesday that the DMK had never opposed anyone’s religious feelings in a debate over banning Dharmapuram’s ‘pattina pravesam’ Adheenam at the beginning of the month.
‘Dharmapuram Adheenam’ was denied permission by the Mayiladuthurai district administration to conduct pattina pravesam, a customary practice in which the pontiff is carried on a palanquin by worshipers on their shoulders. The dispute ended after CM MK Stalin intervened and permission was granted for the ritual by district officials.
“DMK has never opposed or will ever oppose anyone’s religious feelings or devotion. Spiritual and rationalist campaigns can co-exist here,” Stalin said, addressing a rally in Salem.
“If you are really a spiritual person, you should have supported us, instead you are creating community tension and doing community politics. They [Opposition] try to divert the stakes. There are few people who are not able to criticize this government, so they took spiritualism as a weapon,” he added.
Speaking about the achievements of the State Government’s Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Stalin said: “I can proudly say that almost Rs 2,500 crore of temple assets were recovered only under the government DMK Temple documents have been digitized DMK Government We have ensured that people of all castes can become priests We have facilitated the chanting of Tamil hymns in temples during pooja.
“We have increased the funds from one lakh to two lakh for 12,959 temples to hold a unique puja. We will open 10 arts schools under the HR and CE department,” he added.
